Orange Poppy Seed Cake


Prep time:  10 minutes

Cooking time:  50 minutes

Total time:  60 minutes


  • 220g of flour
  • 200g of sugar
  • 2 tsp of baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp of salt
  • 2 1/2 tbsp of poppy seeds
  • 100ml of oil
  • 100ml of yoghurt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • Zest of one orange

Icing ingredients

  • 110g of icing sugar
  • Juice of half an orange


  1. Combine the dry ingredients into a bowl: flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and poppy seeds.
  2. In another bowl, combine the wet ingredients: oil, yoghurt, eggs, vanilla extract and orange zest.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients then fold the mixture with a spatula.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased loaf tin, then bake the cake at 180 degrees celsius for 50 minutes, or until a skewer into the cake comes out clean.
  5. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool for 10 minutes.
  6. For the icing, whisk the icing sugar with the juice of half an orange until it is well combined.
  7. Drizzle the icing over the cake, then garnish the cake with orange zest.
